Santa Barbara sheriff's employee arrested on suspicion of DUI after Cachuma crash

7 people injured in crash

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The driver of a vehicle that crashed head-on with another vehicle near the entrance to Lake Cachuma this weekend is an employee of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office confirmed that Javier Antunez, a custody lieutenant at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He was not on duty at the time of the crash.

Antunez was driving on Highway 154 Saturday evening when his vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle. A third vehicle, a Jeep driven by a woman, hit both of the involved vehicles.

In all, seven people were injured in the crash with four people being taken to the hospital. One person was listed in critical condition when they were airlifted from the scene to a nearby hospital.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Antunez has been employed by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office since 1999.  He has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, officials said.
