San Dimas nets late goal to beat Bishop Diego in CIF Division 7 Semifinal

San Dimas beats Bishop Diego in CIF Semifinal

UC SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Locked in a scoreless tie for much of the match, San Dimas and Bishop Diego looked evenly matched. With only minutes remaining, the Saints broke through when they needed to.

Stephen Cox scored the game's only goal on a strike off the crossbar and in with about four minutes remaining, and San Dimas held on for a 1-0 win over Bishop Diego in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Semifinal at UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon.

Bishop had a late chance to tie after a Saints foul, but referees ruled the foul took place outside the box which resulted in a free kick rather than a penalty kick. The Cardinals were unable to score on that chance as the clock ran out.

The Cardinals played a man down for some of the second half as forward Michael Luckhurst was called for his second yellow card and sent off.

San Dimas' Derek Covarrabius was sent off with a red card later in the half to bring both teams to 10 players on the field.

The Saints move on to the Division 7 Final, where they will play Thacher on Friday.
