VENTURA, Calif. - An investigation is underway after a CHP officer opened fire on a driver during a traffic stop Monday in Ventura.
Investigators say a CHP officer tried to stop a driver on Highway 101 around 11:20 a.m. Monday. The driver didn't stop, and instead exited the freeway and drove onto city streets. The driver ended up on Comstock Street, which is a dead-end.
At that point, the officer says the driver made a U-turn and drove toward the officer, who then opened fire.
The driver kept driving and got away. It is unclear whether the driver was hit or injured in the shooting.
The driver's empty vehicle was located about two and a half hours later on the 2200 block of Katari Avenue, which is about two miles away from the scene of the shooting.
Investigators were still trying to locate the driver as of 6 p.m. Monday.
The CHP officer was not injured during the incident.
The Ventura Police Department is assisting the CHP in its investigation.
