GOLETA, Calif. - Commuters tired of heavy traffic on Highway 101 between Ventura and Goleta now have a new option.
On April 2, Amtrak Pacific Surfliner started a new schedule designed for commuters who work in Santa Barbara, but live in Ventura County.
The northbound train is scheduled to arrive in Goleta at 7:15 a.m. weekdays and the Southbound train is scheduled to depart at 3:45 p.m. weekdays.
The first morning train was delayed in Camarillo when a train was on the wrong track, but the Santa Barbara County of Association of Governments expects to have those problems worked out in time for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon.
California Secretary of Transportation Brian Annis is scheduled to attend the event.
Traffic Solutions has some incentives to get workers to give the new train schedule a try.
They have a lottery to give out fold-up bikes to commuters who use them at least 40 times.
They also have free train tickets.
Passes will cost about $150 a month.
One software engineer who commutes to work said he prefers the train to existing commuter buses or driving a car.
City bus service now has a route timed to take people to major employers from the Goleta train station.
