SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly plans to announce its new head basketball coach Thursday.
According to sources close to Sports Director Mike Klan, the Mustangs hired Cal State Fullerton Associate Head Coach John Smith as the new head coach.
It will be his first division one head coaching job.
Smith has spent the past six years as an assistant with the Titans. Before that, he was the head coach at Riverside City College.
Last week, San Diego State assistant Coach Rod Palmer and former Colorado State head coach Larry Eustachy were also interviewed in Long Beach. At the time, Palmer was said to be the leading candidate from those interviews.
Jeff Schemmel of College Sports Solutions helped Cal Poly with the job search and Schemmel had his committee in Long Beach.
According to a report by the San Diego Union-Tribune, former UNLV head coach Marvin Menzies has also talked to Cal Poly officials.
University President Jeff Armstrong and Athletic Director Don Oberhelman will introduce the new men's head basketball coach Thursday at 4 p.m.
After the new head coach speaks, reporters will get a chance to ask questions.
Cal Poly fired head coach Joe Callero earlier this month after a last-place finish in the Big West.
