Patrick Vega memorial swim takes place at Oxnard High School

OXNARD, Calif. - Swimmers dove in and swam more than a mile in memory of Patrick Vega who died pursing his dream of becoming a marine.

Vega,21, fell unconsious and died on March 25, 2018 during boot camp in San Diego.

He received full military honors during his service at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura last year.

Rep. Salud Carbajal spoke during the service and promised to look into boot camp deaths that have happened before.

Vega was a popular swimmer at Oxnard High School where his younger sister Kate served as team captain the year he died.

Kate Vega who is now studying to be a teacher at Cal Lutheran University joined in the swim.

She was thrilled with the number of swimmers that included current and former swim team members.

Some of her brother's best friends were on spring break and jumped in. 

They went 2200 yards in his memory.
