SOLVANG, Calif. - Solvang has opened the 30-day application process for anyone looking to own and operate a medical marijuana dispensary in the city.
Rejecting any type of recreational marijuana storefront, the City of Solvang has authorized only one medical marijuana dispensary.
Those interested can apply online at: https://www.cityofsolvang.com/civicalerts.
Interested applicants will have to jump through many hoops to be considered for the coveted dispensary permit.
"As far as I'm concerned, as long as they're in compliance and jumping through the hoops that they are asked to jump through, I really don't have a problem with cannabis", said Steve Franco who works in Solvang.
Concerned about protecting its world famous image as a family-friendly, global tourist destination, the City's designated location for the commercial medical cannabis dispensary is on the outskirts of town at the Valley Industrial Center complex along Highway 246.
Some of the other businesses that share the industrial complex on the western edge of the city are not happy about having a marijuana dispensary, medical or otherwise, as a future neighbor.
"I don't think it's the place for it", said Mark Anderson who has worked at the Industrial Center for decades, "a little disturbing that somebody from the city came down and told our boss he ought to get his fences up, you know, be prepared, because, you know, I don't know what that meant, are we supposed to be aware of the type of people coming down here or, I don't know."
Others who work in the Valley Industrial Center say the City of Solvang is trying to keep up with the changing times.
"As far as medical, medicinal purposes, there's a lot of good coming out of the CBD oils and everything that goes along with it", Steve Franco said, "I'm all for it actually."
The City of Solvang's Commercial Medical Cannabis Dispensary application process ends at 5 p.m. on February 22.
