SANTA MARIA, Calif. - By all accounts, 13 year old Leo Navarro was a typical, happy-go-lucky, soccer-loving boy who enjoyed spending time with his large family that shared a modest home on West Polk Street in Santa Maria.
All that came to an end on Saturday afternoon when Santa Maria Police say Leo Navarro suffered a gunshot wound from a gun fired by his 19 year old brother Fernando inside the family home.
Leo Navarro died later in the hospital.
SMPD arrested Fernando Navarro and charged him with negligent discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm in violation of a court order.
Its unknown if Fernando Navarro will face additional charges related to his brother's death.
"We're not doing so well", said 15 year old Maria Navarro outside her family home on West Polk Street Monday afternoon, "we're trying to be strong, we're trying to move on but its really hard, Leo was, he was like the heart and soul of our family."
The Navarro family tragedy has rocked their tight-knit neighborhood on West Polk Street.
"It hurts because I've seen him (Leo Navarro) since he was small, like I've seen him grow up", said neighbor and Navarro family friend Cesilia Gallardo, "it's just crazy to see, to know that he's not here no more."
"I mean he was my buddy, we'd play together, didn't matter if he was a guy, I'd go to his friend's house, he'd go to my friend's house too, it's really hard without him", Maria Navarro said.
Neighbors are planning a barbeque fundraiser for the Navarro family and a GoFundMe page has been set-up in Leo Navarro's name.
