SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - An Orcutt man who killed his girlfriend's 19-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
On Jan. 22, Sean Kothe, 27, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for killing Delilah Cossio-Molina in 2016. Kothe also pleaded guilty for threatening a witness, three counts of child abuse and attempted escape from County Jail.
On Wednesday, Judge Gustavo Lavayen sentenced Kothe to 25 years in prison at the Santa Barbara Superior Court, Santa Maria Division.
In a separate case, Kothe pleaded guilty to bringing heroin into County Jail.
Between Jun 25-26, 2016, Kothe babysat Delilah at his home while her mother was at work. While in Kothe's care, Delilah suffered a traumatic brain injury, a skull fracture and subdural hematoma. Kothe never contacted anyone for medical care. He eventually told Delilah's mother that she needed to come home and take the toddler to the hospital.
When Delilah arrived at the hospital she was unresponsive and unconscious. She died from her injuries just a few days after.
The crime was investigated by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley said of the sentencing: "Although no amount of time in prison can ever bring Delilah back, we hope this plea will enable her family to find some sense of closure and begin the arduous process of healing."
