LOMPOC, Calif. - An imate serving time at the United States Penitentiary, Lompoc died in his cell Sunday morning.
The inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at around 4:20 a.m. by prison staff.
Prison staff say they administered life-saving measures to resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful. Paramedics responded to the cell and continued to try to save the man's life but ultimately pronounced him dead.
His identity will be released pending notification of next of kin.
As the death happened at a federal facility, the FBI will investigate the incident.
USP Lompoc is a medium-security facility that currently houses 1,282 male inmates in Lompoc.
