SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Installation of the first all-inclusive playground in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District is wrapping up at Robert Bruce Elementary School.
The playground will feature ramps to allow all children to participate in recess.
Robert Bruce elementary teacher Lisa Johns wrote a grant and was awarded $150,000 through Gametime to partially fund the new playgrounds for the whole school.
Johns teaches a class for severely handicapped students in transitional kindergarten, first grade and second grade. Some of Johns' students use wheelchairs or walkers for mobility.
The district is funding the rest of the playground refurbishment, which costs approximately $138,740.
The work is expected to be completed on Friday and students are expected to be able to use the playgrounds the following week.
