Sheriffs Deputies donate blood during mobile drive

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Deputies took time out of their day to donate blood in their parking lot inside a mobile blood drive vehicle.

They said a bullet that pierced an officer's pant leg during a shootout last week came close to doing major damage.

He might have needed blood and that inspired some deputies to donate at Vitalant's mobile drive.

Sgt. Mark Valencia said, "We need blood everyday."

Their donations inspired KEYT videographer Michael Orosco to donate, too.

"I've seen a lot of accidents and stuff like that and feel that they may need it one day so I am healthy right now, so I can donate," Orosco said.

In return, donors enjoyed chocolate chip cookies and rice krispy treats made in the county jail.

They also enjoyed brownies made by the longtime drive organizer Anita Diaz.

Diaz said people join law enforcement to help people and she said this was another way to help by giving the gift of life.

She is planning another drive with Vitalant on 9/11. To donate visit the Vitalant website for information.
