Woods Humane Society holds spay, neuter clinic for stray cats

ATASCADERO, Calif. - A San Luis Obispo County humane society held a cat spay and neuter clinic on Thursday.

Woods Humane Society hosted the event at the shelter's Daphne Fahsing Spay & Neuter Clinic in Atascadero.

The event was open to the public but the primary focus was to provide surgeries for stray or feral cats throughout north San Luis Obispo County.

In all, 94 cats received the surgeries as well as vaccinations and general veterinary treatments.

The "community cats" are cats that live outside in colonies and have no owners. Spaying and neutering clinics are held to reduce the number of feral outdoor cats throughout the area.

Each fixed community cat receives an "ear tipping" to designate that it's received the spaying or neutering. Cats can be wrangled and brought into the clinics to be fixed for a low-rate, reducing the amount of feral cats reproducing in the area.

Woods Humane Society's low-cost spay and neuter clinics are located in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero, and they are open to the public by appointment.
