SHELL BEACH, Calif. - Shell Beach has an unusual paving job that locals are calling the Lombard Street of the Central Coast.
The unusual zigzag striping on Shell Beach Road is all part of a project that has been in the works for over 20 years.
The project will put power lines underground and also consists of installing a water line on the business side of the street.
Ben Fine, Director of Public Works for the City of Pismo Beach said the main concern of the project was to preserve as much parking as possible and increase safety for workers and community.
"The contractor and the design team got together and really brainstormed how can we create a safe work zone on the freeway side of the street while preserving parking on the business side of the street," Fine said. "That's where the idea of the zigzagging road came about."
This phase of the project should last about six months then the road will be striped back to the way people remember it.
