Vegetation fire reported near Highway 166 in New Cuyama

Highway 166 near Mexican Ranch

NEW CUYAMA, Calif. - Firefighters worked to contain a vegetation fire that broke out along Highway 166 in New Cuyama Wednesday morning.

According to a log by the California Highway Patrol, the fire broke out just before 8:30 a.m. near Spanish Ranch. The reporting party indicated a semi truck was dragging a chain and broke off the vehicle, possibly sparking the fire.

The fire is estimated to be about five acres in size. Officials with the Los Padres National Forest and the Santa Barbara County Fire Department are working to control the fire.

Highway 166 is not being impacted, CHP said.
