Fire breaks out in Santa Clara Riverbed in Oxnard

Area with known homeless encampments

OXNARD, Calif. - A brush fire has been put out by firefighters in the Santa Clara Riverbed in Oxnard.

The flames were first reported at 3:39 a.m. to the west of Highway 101. It's burning in an area that is a known homeless encampment. 

Firefighters with Ventura County Fire Department and the Oxnard Fire Department responded to the area. Officials told NewsChannel 3 that they always worry about sending firefighters into this area at night due to the safety risk. 

By 5:30 a.m. crews had put out the flames and mopped up the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
