Transient man accused of sexual assault in Lompoc riverbed

LOMPOC, Calif. - A 63-year-old transient man was arrested Monday as Lompoc police cleared out an illegal camp in the Santa Ynez riverbed just outside of Lompoc.

At around 8:30 a.m., officers were working a special detail to make contact with people who had illegally begun moving back into the riverbed.

Officers located Rufino Vargas in the area and he was arrested on an oustanding warrant. While officers spoke to others in the camp, one person accused Vargas of sexual assault. A witness confirmed the story and Vargas could now face additional charges.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Lompoc Police Department. Police say the crime happened outside of police jurisdiction.
