SANTA MARIA, Calif. - A 27-year old who was threatening to kill himself was shot and killed by Santa Maria police officers Sunday night.
Police were called to the man's home in the 400 block of E. Mill Street at 6:15 p.m. Sunday night and were confronted by Alejandro Valdez in front of the home. Valdez was armed with two knives, according to police.
Officers tried to negotiating with Valdez, and a less-lethal "sponge round" was fired at him. Valdez kept moving toward police, so four officers fired lethal rounds at him.
As is standard procedure, the officers who fired the fatal shots were placed on administrative leave while the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office investigates the incident.
An autopsy is planned on Tuesday.
