Meiners Oaks man charged with murder for roommate's death

Accused of using sledgehammer in killing

VENTURA, Calif. - The man accused of killing his roommate in the Ojai Valley and disposing of his body has been formally charged with murder.

Cameron Lykins, 23, of Meiners Oaks appeared in Ventura County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Lykins was charged with murder in the death of his roommate Houston Auer that occurred at their home near Ojai on Sunday. Ventura County District Attorney said the murder charge comes with a special allegation that Lykins used a sledgehammer to kill Auer.

Lykins was arrested Sunday in Lone Pine where he fled after the murder.

Ventura County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the residence of Lykins and Auer and found a bloody scene and no sign of the roommates. Deputies believe Lykins disposed of Auer's body and fled to Lone Pine. His body has still not been recovered.

Lykins is set to be arraigned on June 13. He remains in custody on a $2 million bail.
