SANTA MARIA, Calif. - UPDATE:
Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for a man who caused a chaotic scene at a Santa Maria Apartment complex playground Tuesday and we now know more about the man on the loose.
“There were police everywhere going to patios with their guns looking for something,” said a Westgate Courtyard tenant who asked not to be identified.
As of Wednesday afternoon, you could still see the mangled damaged deputies say Saam Massoudi caused when he plowed into a fence and escaped, just feet from where several children were playing.
“My kids are outside playing and they heard all the commotion and they came in and I told them you’re staying in,” said Brooke Edelen, Westgate Courtyards resident.
Like Edelen, many folks who live in the Santa Maria apartment complex are on edge.
“That’s all we heard all day, just helicopters flying around, police all over the place. It was terrible,” said the unidentified woman.
A Compliance Team tried to pull the 33-year-old over Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say the Santa Maria man initially yielded to deputies but when they approached his Dodge Caravan he took off.
Before deputies could get back into theIR vehicles, Massoudi allegedly lost control of his minivan and rash into a concrete gate near a playground.
“They were there for awhile, trying to see if they could catch them, whoever was running on the backside right here,” said Edelen.
Massoudi and an unknown passenger fled the scene and authorities were unable to track them down.
“I hope they catch the bad guy,” said Edelen.
When deputies searched the minivan they found meth and drug paraphernalia.
Massoudi is still on the loose and wanted by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office for outstanding felony warrants plus several new charges from Tuesday’s incident including; willfully fleeing law enforcement officers in a vehicle without disregard for the safety of others, hit-and-run and possession of methamphetamine for sales.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department is searching for Saam Massoudi of Santa Maria who already had a warrant out for his arrest when he attempted to flee from deputies but instead crashed into a playground in Santa Maria.
Sheriff's deputies from the Compliance Response Team (CRT) conducted a traffic stop on a black Dodge Caravan around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday after the car was seen traveling through a stop sign without coming to a complete stop at the intersection of Duvali Street and Estriga Lane in the city of Santa Maria.
Deputies say the car initially yielded to the deputies, but upon approach, the driver quickly fled the scene, losing control and crashing through a concrete gate and into a kid's play area in the Westage Courtyard Apartment where several children were playing.
The Sheriff's Office says witnesses identified the driver as 33-year old Saam Massoudi of Santa Maria, who already had a warrant issued for his arrest. Deputies say Massoudi and an unknown passenger fled the scene after the crash.
During the search of the vehicle, deputies found a bag containing 35.1 grams of meth, as well as a digital scale believed to help facilitate the sale of narcotics.
Massoudi is currently wanted by the Sheriff's Office for his outstanding felony warrants, plus several charges related to his actions Tuesday including willfully fleeing law enforcement officers in a vehicle without disregard for the safety of others, hit-and-run and possession of meth for sales.
