ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. - Velma Mathias celebrated quite a milestone on Monday afternoon.
With many friends and family on hand, the longtime Nipomo resident turned 106 years old.
"I tried to skip it," said Mathias, displaying her wry sense of humor. "I thought it would be a good idea to skip it. It's kind of overwhelming, but it's been very nice."
To celebrate the momentous occasion, a birthday party was held in her honor at Alder House in Arroyo Grande, where Mathias moved earlier this year.
"It's kind of overwhelming," said Mathias. "I don't think I deserve it."
Born September 13, 1913 in Newell, South Dakota, Mathias later moved to Colorado.
After graduating from the University of Colorado, she entered the teaching profession.
Along with her husband Bob, the two later moved to North Hollywood in the early 1940's, where she would work in a number of different professions.
In 1975, the Mathias' moved to Nipomo, where she lived up until she moved to the Alder House senior residence this year.
The Mathias' were married for 75 years. Bob Mathias lived until he was 103-years-old.
Together, they had one son and several grandchildren.
Their son Ed Mathias, who lives in Arroyo Grande, was on hand for his mother's 106th birthday celebration.
She said she was happy to have her family there for the special day.
"If it wasn't for my family, I don't know what I would do," said Velma Mathias.
