Rare 'Century' horse ride over the weekend at the Earl Warren Showgrounds

Horse and rider combine ages

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A milestone in the equestrian community took place over the weekend in Santa Barbara with the Century ride at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

The owner, Karen Jenkins of Santa Barbara, who is 80 years old, along with her 20-year old horse Homer combined for 100 years in the special event.

The ride took place at a special event with the Santa Barbara County Chapter of the California Dressage Society.

Jenkins was cheered on by many friends and supporters in the arena seats including her husband Si, and son Josiah. All are longtime supporters of Old Spanish Days and the Rodeo Stock and Horse show.

They own Jedlicka's Saddlery and Western Store in Los Olivos. The Santa Barbara location closed this year.

The combined riding age of 100 for the special Century Club honor is rare for the Dressage Foundation. It involves a special ride that shows the obedience, flexibility and balance between rider and horse.

Homer was also on the Old Spanish Days ride earlier this month as part of El Desfile Historico for Fiesta. Homer was also in the 2013 Fiesta poster.
