Holiday animal shelter promotions helps hundreds of animals find new homes

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Hundreds of animals have new forever homes thanks to the seven shelters across the Central Coast.

The shelters gave away any animals six months and older, free of charge, over the holiday weekend.
The goal was to help with overpopulation. Some animals came from overcrowded Ventura County shelters after the Woolsey and Hill fires.

“It was a good adoption day for us, we usually wouldn’t do that many adoptions. I think it was really cool though that we partnered with all the human society’s. Everyone coming together really generated a lot of excitement about this, ” said Dori Villalon from Santa Barbara County Animal Shelter.

The promotion resulted in over 260 adoptions of cats, dogs, and even a chinchilla in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Normal adoption requirements are still in place.

The Santa Maria Animal Center is doing a new promotion on Wednesday with all cat adoptions fees for $20 dollars.
