SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Locals and tourists are regulars at Rudy's near Santa Barbara's historic Presidio.
The most popular item on the menu posted by the door is the crispy chicken taco.
"I order it every time it's the best taco you can get anywhere," Bruce Raph said.
Bill Spencer agrees. "I love it. It tastes good."
Gail Pine ordered her taco to go.
"They really do make the best taco in town, they put loads of cheese on it," Pine said.
The large corn tortilla can be filled with chicken or beef and costs less than $5. A salsa bar allows customers to make it as hot as their palate allows.
Rudy's opened its first restaurant in 1976. The newest one is run by Rudy's youngest daughter, Andrea Steward.
"He is known for his crispy taco and there is a very specific way to make it," Steward said.
So what is the secret to Rudy's success?
"It is the way he seasons it, how he heats up the tortilla, it's not on a pre-made shell, everything is made to order, I think that is the secret," said Steward.
Rudy's has five locations in the area, three in Santa Barbara, one in Carpinteria and one in Buellton. The Rudy's location run by Steward is located at 138 E Canon Perdido St.
