GOLETA, Calif. - Young cyclists were taught about proper bicycle safety and the importance of wearing your helmet at a "bike rodeo" event in Goleta on Saturday.
The 'Brain Care Bike Fair' was held at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital on Hollister Avenue. Event organizers aimed to help kids improve their bike riding skills and learn about concussion awareness.
COAST, the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation, said that Santa Barbara ranks second for its number of bicyclist collisions among cities of comparable size.
The Cottage Concussion Clinic and Trauma Services was also at the event to answer questions and provide information on how to prevent and recognize concussions.
More than one million children under the age of 18 experience sports and recreation-related concussions. Many concussions are unreported because the majority of injuries occur without the loss of consciousness.
Kids brought their bikes and helmets and were able to ride through a bike safety course in a safe and fun environment.
