LOCAL SCHOOL GETS NEW FLAGPOLE, FLAG

On May 26th, 2010 a very special gift from the graduating 8th grade class, with funds raised by the Student Council, will be erected in front of the Santa Ynez Valley Charter School. Since the renovations of the school several years ago, SYVC has been without a flagpole, a staple which no other school in the county is lacking. And to be raised with the flagpole is a very special flag- it was one of the flags originally flown over the White House. The flag, itself, was graciously donated by Congressman Elton Gallegly.

The official flag pole raising will be held on May 26th at 8 am in front of the school. All veterans are invited- and encouraged- to attend the ceremony, as well as members of the community. There will be a full assembly with presentations from the students about flag etiquette and the significance of Memorial Day, as well as refreshments, some very special guests.

“When I first arrived at SYVCS, I was struck by the lack of a flagpole,” Colleen Million, Director of the Santa Ynez Valley Charter School, explains “When I asked why we didn’t have one, I was told that prior to the reconstruction of the school a few years ago, there had been one. During the renovations, though, the flagpole had been removed, and it had never been replaced.”

“Our 8th graders have shown themselves to be true leaders in our school.” Mrs. Million, continues. “They have not only identified equipment our school was lacking, but took the initiative to resolve the deficit on their own. It is no coincidence that our students are also celebrating their citizenship this month and the 8th grade class chose to express sense of civic and school pride by giving us this wonderful gift. I am very proud of them and grateful for all their hard work!”

It is wonderful school and the students saw a patriotic need for the school and fulfilled it. We are lucky to have such industrious and hard working students who "burn to learn"

Hey Alice? What did that flag pole ever do to you. It's sad you would think something as positive as students setting, working towards and achieving their goals as boring.
