The 7th Annual Santa Barbara Brazilian “Carnaval Cultural” is unique in it’s format of promoting the Brazilian culture by integrating art and education, as well as the element of ecological and social concerns. The Brazilian Carnaval Cultural will bring a weekend extravaganza with three events and the exposure of Brazilian Culture in Santa Barbara County through popular art, cinema, lectures, dance and music.
The kickoff event for 2010 happens on Friday Feb 19th at 7pm at the Santa Barbara Central Public Library/ Faulkner Gallery, co-hosted by Non-Profit SB Permaculture Network and Soul Brasil magazine, featuring the film screening of “Foliar Brasil”, from director Carolina Paiva, a documentary-drama about three of the most important popular manifestations of Brazil, lectures by special guests Hannah Jacobs (Socio-Cultural Anthropology/UC Berkeley – talking about her experience while living in the Para State/Amazon Region) and Meire Fernandes (Founder of Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival – Talking about the diversity of Brazilian Culture and the new Brazilian Cinema); Saturday Feb 20th at 9pm at So-Ho with the “Carnaval Bowl Fiesta” featuring the local Afro-Brazilian band “Mariano Silva & Prakantar”, the energetic Rio Style Batucada by “Nos do Gheto”, Capoeira Moves by Capoeira Batuque SB and different choreography performances by Raiz Brazil Dance Company from L.A, plus an Art Expo by Brazilian artists; Sunday Feb 21st at 1:30pm – and finally confirmed at Timbers Super Club, the Family Brazilian Culture Carnaval featuring an amazing performance by Campbell Hall High School (L.A) 12 piece Samba Ensemble, Samba Feather dancers, Afro Brazilian show by Capoeira Batuque SB and Soul Brasil friends, Brazilian Culinary Delights and a special “Street Soccer Goal Competition” for kids (and prizes for the winners).
