With Santa Barbara’s heightened awareness and concerned about the discarded plastics that have impacted local beaches and oceans, Santa Barbara High School’s award-winning Dons Net Café is proud to host a press conference for HOT DAY (Healing Oceans Together) this Sunday, June 7th at 10:15am at Leadbetter Beach.
The negative impact of discarded plastics directly affects the local ecosystem, especially the sea life, from tiny plankton to great whales, thus slowly killing animals in every step of the food chain. The event this weekend will create awareness and direct action to help restore the local oceanic environment. Through the press conference and the following beach clean up, the Dons Net Café will support the Kasei Foundation’s research vessels on their expedition from San Francisco to Hawaii.
At HOT Day, the Dons Net Café will continue their work of educating the Santa Barbara community about the damaging effects of using plastic bags. In addition, the students have created contests for people of all ages along with a fun beach clean up sponsored by their partners, Looking Good Santa Barbara. In order to motivate and educate young children about the importance of their environment, games and prizes will be provided for participation.
Donations will be accepted to help cover the cost of organizing this event. Any additional contributions will benefit the DNC and Project Kaisei. The Dons Net Cafe will be offering a sign-up sheet for those who wish to donate and are interested in the well-being of the ocean and the environment. The Dons Net Café was recently awarded first prize for their expansive environmental programs at the SAGE Competition (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship).
