Handsome could be called a "work horse" in the true spirit of the word. But he's also a very different kind of "work horse." Handsome is a miniature horse, meaning he stands at 34 inches at his withers (the base of his neck) and where he works his hardest is when he's helping the bell ringers for the Salvation Army.
With bells around his lower leg, he waves "hi" to make the bells ring. He also has a cowbell that he bites nodding his head up and down. Handsome takes all this bell ringing very seriously, since he knows he'll get a carrot or two for his efforts.
Handsome also stands on a pedestal and poses for pictures. All in all he seems to enjoy his job and the people who come to visit show their appreciation of his efforts by filling the coffers for the Salvation Army.
Handsome will be working this coming Saturday at the Vons in Carpinteria.
