The Haitians are still living in tents following the devastating earthquake in January of this year. The children sleep on the ground and are still searching for shelter and food. Watching the news videos of the children and families suffering in Haiti is hard to watch, and many Americans feel they must do something. One of these caring people is my sister, Cheryl. She lives in Santa Barbara and is a sucessful paralegal for a downtown law firm. She has a talent for crocheting and made a pledge to devote her free time after work and on weekends to making children's blankets to send to the Haitian children. It was a commitment she made several months ago, and is now finally ready to send them to Haiti.
I remember when she asked me if I could donate some yarn for her project. Cheryl has been such a support to me in the last two years since I was laid off, and then had an injury which has prevented me from being able to work, that I was very excited to be able to do something to help her. So off I went from one store to the next, gathering as much yarn as I could carry. When I told the managers what my sister was using it for---they said, "How wonderful, please take the yarn free of charge!!" Wow, I think that's called "paying it forward." Generosity is contagious in this country.
Recently, I recall hearing President Obama say, "We help each other . . . this is what we do as a people, and what we do as Americans."
As far back as the 17th century, a famous Puritan and preacher named John Bunyan wrote in his book, "Pilgrams Progress,"
"You have not lived today until you have
done something for someone who can never
repay you."
It's never too late to pay it forward.
It is Not Too Late to Donate to Haiti!!
