A sign encouraging them to give Annie back

What if someone else had your dog...

Chuck Hogue of SLO County lost his dog, Annie, in June. Devastated, he called SLO Animal Services, filed a report, searched high and low for Annie who he's had for 8 years. A few weeks ago Chuck got a call from Animal Services, "We found Annie!" Chuck, overwhelmed with relief and emotion raced to the shelter only to find....they'd adopted her out to another family!

Chuck and the County Supervisors have appealed to the family who adopted Annie and have requested they return Annie to her rightful home with Chuck. The family has refused. They are adamant, they are keeping Annie no matter what.

A grassroots campaign has begun (including a facebook group entitled: Give Chuck Hogue Annie back) has been started and the anger of the community is building. Why did Animal Services adopt out a dog whose owner was on the way to take her home?

Chuck needs help to get Annie back, the best way we can help is by putting this story out there and applying public pressure. Please help!

Anyone ever check why the dog was lost to begin with? A responsible owner doesn't have this problem. Do you get phone calls from child services sayin they found your kid? I say le the new owners keep her. Maybe they'll be more responsible.

I want to know if the dog had its tags. How did the dog get lost? Did the owner check everyday. My dog got out on the fourth of july. I checked everyday with animal control. They called me the day she showed up and I went and got her right then.

So ironic that Animal Services were willing to take the time to get Annie adopted but not to find out who owned her in the first place. My dog was gone for night;called to see if the shelter had him they were preparing paperwork to give him away

I think he needs a court order to get her back !!!!!

If a dog is left in the shelter long enough to be put up for adoption, then maybe the original owner isn't responsible enough to be a pet owner? I don't really think the adoptive family is right in keeping Annie, but they have their reasons.

My next door neighbor has a great dog that I want to steal, but I live next door. So I had to go to the owner and ask to borrow the dog. Now we have an arrangement where the dog comes to visit every once in a while.

Giving Annie back to Chuck is a gift that this family can give to all involved. Dogs are intelligent and Annie is smarter than most! She is undoubtely grieving. I would love to be there when she is returned as I know she will be!

This is so sad. I just don't understand how the shelter could make such a stupid mistake! Now everybody suffers, the dog, the rightful owner and the idiots whe adopted Annnie and now refuse to give her back. How spiteful and selfish of them.

I am sorry the family who now has Annie suffered 2 losses (presumably through death) in their family but that does not make it right for them to cause another person unnecessary grief. They need to step up and do the right thing...give her back.

I think some local law firm should help Chuck get Annie back

If Animal Services called Chuck to say that they had his dog, they should have removed him from adoption and waited for Chuck to pick Annie up. It is SLO County Animal Services who needs to demand return of Annie from the un-rightful new owner.

I have been waiting for someone to say something about the dog's feelings. She is robably terrified. She wants to be with her former owner. My heart breaks for how confused and scared she must be. No animal lover would keep a dog from it's owner.

Teri says ... on Tuesday, Aug 24 at 9:15 AM

Honestly, what about the dog! What about the trauma the dog is undergoing being separated from his person! Surely the new owners must see this in Annie. Set up a meeting with Chuck and just watch who the dog runs to, shows love and loyalty to! WTH

This is so sad, what is wrong with these people, all I have to say is karma is a b*^%$# and if these people are not careful she might just bite them in the rear! What trash, great example you're setting for your kids, way to be parents!!!

This is a horrible thing to do to somebody, but i have heard of this happening before. Shelters may be overwhelmed & understaffed but they should make this right if they expect us to trust & support county shelters.

Don't give up hope....we all need to help! This could be us fighting to get our precious pet back one day!!

Our Aussi "Zin" is is my husband's shadow. He was frantic last Friday when he came home and could not find her.She was downstairs sound asleep and did not hear the trk. My husband's anxiety in his voice and then the excitement of Zin greeting, LOVE!

The WHOLE community will battle the new owners until Annie is returned to Chuck. What the heck kind of people are the adopted family....obviously not previous, dog-loving owners. Annie was a working dog on a ranch...tags may not have been good.

Deanna says ... on Saturday, Aug 21 at 11:02 AM

What a horrible message these parents are passing on to their children. Sometimes its hard to do the right thing, but the opportunity to teach compassion is knocking at their door, obviousley not their hearts...SO SAD!!! Chuck, your in our thoughts!

Anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 7:56 PM

obviously the people that adopted the dog are not animal lovers or caring and should not have been allowed a dog in the first place. Their blatant disregard for the owner shows their lack of compassion.

Karen Krahl, D.C. says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 7:22 PM

..Absolutely incredulous that the people who got the dog from Animal services, are adamant "they are not giving the dog back no matter what." Better keep the dog indoors, we spot her, you betcha, she's going home.

Barbara says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 5:34 PM

I have two goldens who are like children to me. I cannot understand or imagine how, two people, presumably adults, are so lacking in simple charity and kindness that they would choose to keep a dog that belongs to someone else. my prayers w/ chuck

gina says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 5:10 PM

oh so sad....esp w/ so many wonderful dogs die-ing (literally) 4 lack of a new home. Give annie back & rescue another deserving dog! Just heard of a fab aussie shepherd who was returned 2 DAWG santa barbara after his owner died. go see!!

i heart ANIMALS! says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 3:53 PM

Who would refuse to not give someones dog back. I mean seriously, if I adopted a dog and found out that the owners want them back, I would give the dog back, unless the owner was cruel to the dog. But not on this case, Annie is like a family to Chuck

teesa says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 3:20 PM

I AUhgggrrrrruuuueeeeee !!!

Anonymous says ... on Friday, Aug 20 at 6:31 AM

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE REFUSE TO GIVE A PERSON BACK HIS DOG? SOMEONE NEEDS TO RECON THAT DOG FROM THE DOG'S CAPTORS AND RETURN THE DOG TO ITS RIGHTFUL OWNER. SOMETHING IS FISHY. SOMEBODY HAS SOME CULPABILITY HERE. RETURN THE DOG NOW

anonymous says ... on Thursday, Aug 19 at 10:02 PM

Isn't it funny that three people call to report that Annie was missing and not one of those reports can be found. They said on the radio that the missing dog reports are kept for 90 days. I wonder who deleted them . It really seems strange.

Anonymous says ... on Thursday, Aug 19 at 7:45 AM

Give Chuck Annie back? what does that even mean?

Anonymous says ... on Wednesday, Aug 18 at 1:37 PM

I hope this poor man gets his dog back, I can only imagine, ihave a 2 year old lab/shepard mix and I would be devastated without my dog in my life, his like a child to me and my baby... please give Annie back to her owner ;(

Anonymous says ... on Wednesday, Aug 18 at 10:58 AM

The adopters only had Annie for a few days and refuse to give her back to her rightful owner and friend of 8 years. This is so wrong. Please join the Facebook group and help bring Annie home to Chuck. They need each other.

Anonymous says ... on Wednesday, Aug 18 at 10:15 AM

I absolutely agree with the comment that pets are like family. It's like taking a child away from their parent. It's selfish!!

Animal Lover says ... on Tuesday, Aug 17 at 9:07 AM

I hope that the family that adopted Annie will realize how much this poor man is suffering at the loss of his dog. Pets often times feel like they're our children, our family. I hope they will rethink their selfish decision.
