Fire Crews Working Like It Was Summer

Fire Crews Working Like it Was Summer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - It might be winter according to the calendar, but for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, they are hard at work as if it was summer.

"Usually in February we would have one battalion chief and one fire engine only. Now we have four engines responding, a battalion, a crew, helicopter, four tankers, and a bulldozer," said Santa Barbara County Fire Chief Michael Dyer.

Fire crews have enough water to fight a fire currently, but they are worried about the future. They are looking into other alternatives such as using ocean water, planning burnings, and using retardant where they can.

"In my 36 years in firefighting I've never seen these type of conditions with the drought and the fire weather," said Dyer.
