How you can help those affected by the recent hurricanes

Information on local and national charities

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - As Hurricanes Harvey and Irma displace thousands of residents in Texas and Florida, many in Central California are wondering how they can lend a hand to those affected thousands of miles away.

The American Red Cross is the big name in disaster relief. Financial donations can be made on their website. You can also call 1-800-RED-CROSS or text HARVEY or IRMA to 90999 to make a $10 donation for those in need.

If you prefer to keep your donation local, Goleta-based non-profit Direct Relief made its entire inventory of medical supplies available to hurricane victims, sending staff and supplies to both Texas and Florida. Donations are used to replenish medical supplies.  You can donate by visiting their website.

Shelter Box is a worldwide charity with headquarters in Summerland.  The organization provides "shelter in a box" - tents which can be easily set up to shelter an entire family - given to displaced people around the world, often working through Rotary Club contacts.  Donations to the organization can be made here.

All charities can be reviewed and evaluated by visiting Charity Navigator.
