SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A 20-year-old woman from Paso Robles was killed Tuesday morning in a crash on Highway 198 just west of I-5.
The California Highway Patrol says a 2004 Chevrolet transporting two women from Paso Robles was leaving a gas station and turned to enter Highway 198 without yielding to the driver of a 2014 Peterbuilt traveling at 40 mph resulting in the collision.
"Without yielding to the Peterbuilt, the Chevrolet accelerated onto state Route 198 and directly into the path of the Peterbuilt," states a CHP collision report.
"The front of the Peterbuilt collided into the left side of the Chevrolet as the Chevrolet was traveling in a southernly direction through the westbound state Route 198 traffic lanes," the report continues.
The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno with major injuries. Authorities are in the process of identifying the driver. The 20-year-old passenger was killed.
CHP says the 52-year-old driver of the Peterbuilt did not suffer injuries.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by CHP but they don't believe drugs or alcohol played a factor in the deadly collision.
