Santa Barbara bicyclist crashes into car after exiting driveway

Speed appears to be a factor

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A bicyclist coming out of a driveway collided with a car passing through the area of Weldon Road and Miramonte Drive in Santa Barbara Wednesday morning.

Santa Barbara police say the bicyclist crashed into the car after making a wide turn soon after exiting his home's driveway and picking up speed due to the slope of the area.

Police say the bicyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and suffered road rash injuries, bumps and bruises. He was standing up and walking around after the crash, but refused to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to our on-scene reporter Joe Buttitta.

The bicycle was completely ruined in the crash. The vehicle's windshield window was smashed. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. The Santa Barbara Police Department is investigating the crash.
