PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Three people were rushed to the hospital after a pickup truck towing a trailer collided with a big rig in Paso Robles.
According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday when an Atascadero man driving a pickup truck made a left turn from Jardine Road onto State Route 46. The Tacoma pickup truck was pulling a utility trailer filled with garbage when the driver failed to enter the acceleration lane next to the median to safely merge onto State Route 46, crossing all lanes. That's when a Freightliner big rig heading in the same direction slammed into the trailer causing the trailer to then crash into the pickup truck. The impact caused the pickup truck to separate from the trailer and flipped over, blocking eastbound traffic.
The passengers of the pickup truck had to be extricated by Cal Fire personnel and were rushed to Sierra Vista Hospital. The driver suffered major injures while his passengers suffered moderate injuries.
The driver of the big rig was not hurt.
It was raining at the time of the crash, CHP said.
Cal Trans responded to remove the garbage from the collision scene.
