MONTECITO, Calif. - The deadly Montecito storm and mudslides took a toll on bridges.

Caltrans is working on a plan to replace destroyed bridges and repair damaged bridges between Carpinteria and Santa Barbara.

The damage made it impossible to use highway 192 as an alternate route during the 13-day closure of the 101 freeway caused by mud and flooding in Montecito.

Forecasters said the bridge damage caused the boulders and mud to flow in unexpected directions the morning of January 9.

California Highway Patrol Officer Jonathan Gutierrez said “There is a lot of structural damage. They have to rebuild these bridges, they have to make sure they are sound and fit and so as long as they are unsafe
we are not going to let anyone drive on them.”

Drivers are likely to notice detours causing traffic jams in Montecito Village.

Caltrans has not yet released a timeline for repairs.
