SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - An Isla Vista man was killed early Saturday morning following a crash and vehicle fire on U.S. Highway 101 near Hope Avenue.
Authorities say 28-year-old Alan Anhphi Vu was driving the wrong way on Highway 101 when the crash happened. They say Vu was traveling northbound on the southbound U.S. 101 lane (fast lane) "at freeway speeds."
Vu was driving a 2012 Nissan Sentra in light traffic, according to investigators, when his car crashed into a concrete K-rail within the freeway median and caught on fire.
The California Highway Patrol said they received calls reporting the wrong-way driver just before 2 a.m. and had all available units respond to the incident. The first arriving officers were able to put out the car fire but Vu died from his injuries at the scene.
Vu's family has been notified of his passing.
Two lanes of U.S. 101 southbound were blocked for about two and a half hours following the crash for an investigation and to clear the wreckage.
