ATASCADERO, Calif. - A man is dead and a woman is seriously injured following a car crash near Atascadero early Sunday evening.
According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened just before 5:00 p.m. when the driver of a 1989 Alfa Romeo convertible was heading north on Highway 101 just south of San Ramon Road when it collided with a Hyundai sedan traveling in the same direction.
The convertible then lost control causing the car to overturn as it traveled up a dirt embankment ejecting the driver, 72-year-old Thomas Cahill who was not wearing a seatbelt and died. The passenger, 72-year-old Ruth Cahill suffered major injuries and was trapped inside the car. Both occupants were rushed to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, the CHP said.
The driver of the Hyundai was not hurt.
The circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.
