Hydrant sheared off after a Sycamore Canyon hit and run in Montecito

Thousands of gallons of water lost down the drain

MONTECITO, Calif. - Thousands of gallons of water gushed from a fire hydrant Thursday night in Montecito after it was sheared off in an accident.

The water was shooting about 15 feet into the air when the Montecito Fire Department arrived on the scene on Sycamore Canyon Road at Ashley Road about 11:20 pm.

Neighbors believe the hydrant was hit by a sports car that left immediately.

The California Highway Patrol was called to the scene because the street is State Route 192 through the area.

It was listed as a hit and run.

Nearby were several people walking on foot and residents say a party had been taking place in the area.  It is unclear if the driver of the out of control vehicle had come from the same location.

No injuries were reported.

The Montecito Water District was called out and the main valve was shut off.
