Driver severely injured after crashing into large oak tree in Santa Ynez Valley

Tow truck helped separate car from tree

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - The driver of a pickup truck was sent to the hospital with major injuries after he crashed into a large oak tree on Highway 154 west of Foxen Canyon Road early Monday morning.

Santa Barbara County Fire Public Information Officer Mike Eliason said the force of impact was so severe that it took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extricate the driver while a tow truck helped separate the pickup from the tree.

The driver of the vehicle has yet to be identified. He was the only occupant at the time of the crash. No other injuries were reported.

A Calstar helicopter was initially called to transport the victim to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital but was unable to fly due to bad weather conditions. The victim, instead, was taken to the hospital by am AMR ambulance.

The crash happened at about 12:44 a.m. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
