Dog killed, driver taken to hospital after crash on Harris Grade Road

LOMPOC, Calif. - Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to the 4700 block of Harris Grade Road Wednesday afternoon for a vehicle crash that left the driver seriously hurt and a pet dog dead.

The crash happened at about 12:04 p.m. when the driver, described to be a man in his 50's, drove off the roadway and landed 35 feet over the side.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered that the driver was still inside the car. The Jaws of Life were used extricate the driver. It took emergency responders about 10 minutes to free the driver, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The driver was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries. Unfortunately, one of three dogs the man was traveling with died at the scene as a result of the crash.

The Buellton-are California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the collision.
