Deadly crash in SLO County kills 19-year-old San Miguel man

Authorities suspect alcohol played a role in crash

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. - A San Miguel man was killed Friday night and another injured when their vehicle veered off the roadway and into a dry riverbed in northern San Luis Obispo County.

The California Highway Patrol says 19-year-old Sean Schultz was driving a 2002 BMW 330i northbound on Ranchita Canyon Road from Nickel Creek Road, east of San Miguel, at a high rate of speed when it went veered into the opposing lane, went off the roadway, through a fence, and into a deep dry riverbed 30 feet below.

Schultz was not wearing his seatbelt at the time and was ejected from the car as a result, according to CHP. He was killed in the crash.

Schultz's passenger, 18-year-old Austin Althof was taken to the hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP collision report. His condition is unknown.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. CHP suspects alcohol played a factor in the crash.
