GOLETA, Calif. - The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office identified the bicyclist killed by an Amtrak passenger train in Goleta on July 20 as 51-year-old Edmund Alexander Backus of Goleta.
Backus was riding his bicycle on the train tracks near the Goleta train station at about 12 p.m. when he was hit by an oncoming train.
The Sheriff's Office said Backus was wearing headphones when he was struck from behind by the northbound Amtrak train.
The train engineer reportedly sounded the horn repeatedly and applied the emergency braking system but was unable to avoid the collision. The train was already in the process of slowing down as it arrived at the Goleta train station.
