Soaring high! Bishop Diego Cardinals are CIF-State Champions in Division 3-AA

Bishop Diego Cardinals Soar to State Bowl Championship Win

Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Bishop Diego Cardinals are flying as high as possible as they are CIF-State Champions in Division 3-AA after dominating Shasta High School 41-6 in a bowl game at Cal Lutheran.

The Cardinals are the only high school team to ever win a State Bowl game in Santa Barbara County.

After trailing early 6-0 the Cardinals quickly took the lead for good. Jake Engel scrambled 38 yards on a 3rd and 14 and was finally taken out of bounds at Shasta's 25-yard line.

Engel completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to John Harris and the Cards grabbed a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter.

Harris was back in the end zone in the first quarter as he ran 59 yards for the score and Bishop Diego led 14-6 after one quarter.

Early in the second quarter Engel rolled out and found Evan McKeegan and the senior alluded two tacklers and dove into the end zone and the Cardinals led 21-6 at halftime.

Shasta opened up the second half by driving the ball deep into Bishop Diego's territory but Dylan Streett stopped the drive with an interception to turn the Wolves away.

The Cardinals advanced the ball down the field and added to their lead on Engel's third touchdown pass of the game. The junior found speedster Isaiah Veal for a 39-yard touchdown to make it 28-6.

Bishop Diego scored again before the third quarter ended as their other quarterback, senior David Gladish hit Dylan Streett for a 17-yard td and the Cardinals were in total command up 35-6.

John Harris tacked on his third touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter with a 19-yard run for the final score of the game.

The Cardinals finish their historic, championship season with a 15-1 record.

They win the CIF-SS Division 6 title, the CIF SoCal Regional Division 3-AA crown and now the CIF-State Championship Bowl Game in Division 3-AA.
