SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - With Labor Day last week, the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table did not meet so this week the organization gave out four Player of the Week Awards at a luncheon at Harry's Plaza Cafe.
The two Male Athlete of the Week awards go to San Marcos High School football receiver Luis Mesino and Santa Barbara High School quarterback Frankie Gamberdella.
Two weeks ago Mesino led the Royals to a 35-19 win over Morro Bay. He caught two touchdown passes and also scored on a kickoff return as San Marcos ended a 17-game losing streak dating back to 2015.
Last Friday Gamberdella tossed five touchdown passes as Santa Barbara routed Channel Islands 47-0.
The two Female Athletes of the Week awards went to Santa Barbara City College cross country runner Tiffany Costello and Laguna Blanca High School volleyball player Laurel Kujan.
Two weeks ago Costello won the Moorpark Challenge in her first collegiate race and set a 5k course record of 19:46.
Kujan had 46 kills and 26 digs helping the Owls finish fifth in a highly competitive tournament in Orange County. Kujan will play beach volleyball for USC next season.
