SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -

Providence High School in Santa Barbara hired Steve Stokes to lead its basketball program.

Stokes comes to the Patriots from Royal High School in Simi Valley. While at Royal Stokes was a member of the coaching staff under Highlanders head coach, Craig Griffin. Royal made deep runs into the C.I.F. playoffs during Stokes' time on campus and that led to the opportunity with Providence.

"In the past I've been contacted about other head coaching jobs because of the success of royal," Stokes said. "But after talking with the administration, talking with the school and meeting with the players it seemed like the fit for me."

Providence is a young team. The varsity is built with five freshman and 3 sophomores.

"They may be young but they're talented," he said.

Stokes says turning the program around will be a process but looks forward to the challenge.
