Tony Payne, the new Ernest Righetti High School Varsity Football Coach,has proved his colors are purple and gold inside and out.
Payne,who graduated as a Warrior in 1995 and played football there, was selected yesterday to take over the athletic program from former veteran coach Ed Herrmann. Payne previously served as an offensive line assistant coach on the team.
The Righetti math teacher is looking toward the future as students,parents and boosters support a championship-caliber program.
“It’san honor to be part of the Warrior football program and just a dream come true,’’ Payne said. “I’ve long dreamed of creating a culture on this football team that our community is proud of and can celebrate and enjoy.’’
Payne has been coaching football for 11 years on the Central Coast at schools including PVHS, OAHS and RHS. He played two years of football at Allan Hancock College before earning a full ride scholarship to West Texas A&M where he also played two years. Payne has a BA Degree from Cal State University, Fresno.
Athletic Director Kevin Barbarick said coach Payne is “ready for the exciting challenges while continuing to serve as a positive role model at campus and throughout the Santa Maria Valley community.’’
