SAQUAREMA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil - WSL Press Release
Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore notched her second win of the season today, winning the Oi Rio Women's Pro in Brazil, extending her lead on the Jeep Leaderboard and enhancing her prospects as she chases an incredible 7th WSL World Title.
Gilmore defeated her closest rival, California’s Lakey Peterson (Santa Barbara) in today’s final. Gilmore was strategically brilliant in the final, recognising the higher tide conditions had altered the wave quality and she adjusted immediately, electing to chase right peeling waves instead of the lefts that had been surfed all day.
As Peterson stuck with the left breaking waves, Gilmore notched up good scores and opened a lead that Lakey was never able to seriously challenge.
As the top two surfers on the rankings, both surfers now head to the surfing island paradise of Bali for two Championship Tour events - The Corona Bali Pro at the perfect river mouth of Keramas AND the completion of the Margaret River event which will be run in the iconic waves at Uluwatu!
