Royals H2O Celebrates First-Ever Channel League Title

GOLETA, Calif. - They waited over ten years for a league title so a couple of overtimes were not going to stop San Marcos girls water polo.

Megan Bergthold's goal in the second overtime gave the Royals a 13-12 win over Santa Barbara and the program's first-ever Channel League title. San Marcos shares the title with the Dons but the Royals will get the top-seed out of league after winning a coin flip.

In a back-and-forth contest, the Royals thought they had Santa Barbara beat after taking a 10-6 lead after three quarters. But the Dons tied the game in the final seconds of regulation on a Betsy Hendrix goal. She had a team-high five goals.

The Dons led 12-11 after one overtime but Riley Heiduk tied it in the second overtime with her team-leading fifth goal on the day. Bergthold became the hero with her second goal of the game, it came with 56 seconds left in the second overtime.

Both teams will find out their CIF playoff opponent on Sunday.
